SHANTANU BORPATRA GOHAIN CHAMPION IN OPEN CATEGORY, ARYAN SONOWAL OF DULIAJAN CLUB CHESS ACADEMY CHAMPION IN UNDER-7, SIVASAGAR BEST MEN'S TEAM, & CACHAR BEST DISTRICT
The 33rd All Assam Chess Championship (International Rating) event held at Karimganj from December 28th 2009 has been concluded today (Jan 3). Shantanu Borpatra Gohain of Sivasagar won the championship in the penultimate round (9th) today by defeating Laisram Imocha of OIL. He scored 7 points out of possible 9. While Trailokya Nanda (Nagaon), Projit Phukan (Sivasagar), Madhab Sarma (Mangaldoi) and Manjit Taw (Sivasagar) were 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively with 7 points each. But due to higher progressive scores they were placed accordingly. In under-7 category Aryan Sonowal of Duliajan Club Chess Academy became the champion with 4 points out of possible 5 and Arindam Saikia of Titabor became runners-up in that category.
The closing ceremony was attended by among others Mr Lalit Mohan Shukla Baidya (MP), Mr Mission Ranjan Das (MLA), Mr Sujit Dhar (Vice President, All Assam Chess Association), Mr Arindam Baruah (General Secretary, All Assam Chess Association), etc and distributed the prizes.

The 33rd All Assam Chess Championship 2009/10 (International Rating) event is going on at Karimganj Higher Secondary School, Karimganj from December 28, 2009.
Till today (Jan 2, 2010) 8th round has been completed. Projit Phukan (7th seed from Sivasagar) and Troilukya Nanda (8th Seed & former Assam Champion from Nagaon) are leading the table with 6.5 points. They are followed by Laisram Imocha (Top seed from OIL, Duliajan), Utpal Baruah (4th Seed from OIL, Duliajan), Shantanu Borpatra Gohain (5th seed, from Sivasagar), Monjit Taw (6th seed from Nagaon), Cheniram Pegu (11 th seed from North Lakhimpur) Madhab Sarmah (12th seed from Mangaldoi) with 6 points each. In 8th round, Projit Phukan and Troilukya Nanda defeated overnight leader Cheniram Pegu and Laisram Imocha respectively. On the other hand 2nd seed player Rajiv Dhar (Kamrup Rural) and 3rd seed player Monoj Baruah (OIL) are trailing with 5.5 points each.
Now the tournament is wide open and any one can become the champion and only one round left. The tournament will be over tomorrow (Jan 3, 2010).

The 33rd All Assam Chess Championship 2009/10 men's events are going on at karimganj from Dec 28th 2009. The games are played under swiss league system. After 3rd round, Utpal Baruah (OIL), Shantanu Borpatra Gohain (Sivasagar), Projit Phukan (Sivasagar), Nandan Buragohain (Lions Kamrupa Chess Academy) and Cheniram Pegu (North Lakhimpur) are leading with 3 points each. They are followd by Manoj Baruah (OIL), L. Imocha (OIL), and Madhab Sarmah (Mangaldoi) with 2.5 points each. Cheniram Pegu defeated former champion Rajiv Dhar (Kamrup) in the 3rd round. Whereas Nandan Buragohain defeated Manjit Taw (former champion). L. Imocha and Madhab Sarmah settled fo a draw.
The tournament will be of 9 rounds and will be finished on 3rd January 2010.
KARIMGANJ (2009-12-28)
The age group (Under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17, under-19), Women's and Veteran's events of All Assam Chess Championship have been concluded on December 27th, 2009 evening at Karimganj H.S. School. Following is the list of winners in different categories:-
All the above rank holders were awarded with cash, certificates and trophies. The total prize money was Rs 45,000/- in all these categories. The prize distribution function was attended by Bibhuti Gogoi, President, All Assam Chess Association, Sujit Dhar, Vice President All Assam Chess Association and Arindam Baruah, General Secretary, All Assam Chess Association. The top two position holders of all the events except Under-19, Women's and veterans will represent Assam in National events in the respective categories. Whereas the top four position holders of Under-19 and Women will represent Assam in the respective National event.
The 33rd All Assam Chess Championship (Open) event will start from today (December 28). This is an international rating event. The men's team of 4 will be selected from this event for the National Challengers 2010 which is likely to be held in Pondichery.
PRESS RELEASE(2009-12-25)
The 33rd All Assam Chess Championship 2009/2010 started at Karimganj Higher Secondary School, Karimganj from December 25, 2009. The age group events i.e. Under- 9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Veterans (Above 45) and Women's have started from 1600 hrs on December 25, 2009. Whereas the men's open (International Rating) event will be started from December 28th, 2009. In age group, veteran's and Women altogether 76 players have participated from 16 districts and 3 academies.
Earlier in the morning (December 25) an opening ceremony was held with Lalit Mohan Shukla Baidya, MP as Chief guest who inaugurated the tournament. Other prominent persons including Mr. Mission Ranjan das, MLA Karimganj North, Mr Bibhuti Gogoi (President, All Assam Chess Association), Mr. Arindam Baruah (General Secretary, All Assam Chess Association), Mr Rajeev Dua (CO, BSF), Mr Hemanta Das (Addl SP, Karimganj) also attended the opening ceremony. The ceremony was preceded by a rally in the Karimganj town flagged off by Mission Ranjan Das, MLA.
At the time of writing this report, two rounds of all the events have been completed and the 3rd round has been going on. After the 2nd round, Satabdajit Sarmah Baruah of Mangaldoi leading with 2 points in under 9 category. In under -11 category, Defending Champion Dipu Pradhan of Sivsagar is leading with 2 points along with Piyush Upadhyay and Himonabh Mahanta, both of Guwahati. Dipu Pradhan defeated Kabyanil Talukdar of Guwahati with a fine tactical end game. In uner 13 category, Trinayan Bhatta of Duliajan Club Chess Academy and Uddipta Kamal Bora of Titabor are leading with 2 points. In under 15 category Krishnasish Gogoi of Guwahati, Vaskar Bijoy Mech of Tinsukia, Udit Narayan Bora of Dibrugarh and Bishal Dhar of Karimganj are leading with 2 points each. In Under 17 category Indrajit Handique of Sivasagar and Chayan Palit of Cachar are leading with 2 points each. In under 19 category Durlav nanda of Titabor and Pranjit Kalita of mangaldoi are leading with 2 points. In Womens category, Mahasweta Kumar of Mangaldoi is leading with 2 points. In veteran section, Defending Champion Bibhuti Gogoi is leading with 2 points along with A. K. Roy of Cachar district.
