Bikramjit Singh of Manipur emerges as the Champions
Bikramjit Singh of Manipur annexed the Championship title in the penultimate round today (Jan 10) in the 3rd North East Chess Championship held at Agartola from January 5th, 2010. He scored 8.5 out of 11 from 11 rounds Swiss league. The 2nd position was also secured by a Manipur player Sanjay Singh followed by Trailokya Nanda (3rd, Assam), Biswajit Nag (4th, Tripura), and Rajkumar Apollosana (5th, Manipur) with 8.5 points each.
The positions were determined on the progressive score method. Santanu Borpatra Gohain, Rajib Dhar and Cheniram Pegu (all from Assam) secured 6th, 7th and 8th positions respectively with 8 points each whereas Monjit Taw (Assam) and Y. Dhanbir Singh (Manipur) were 9th and 10th respectively with 7.5 points each.
In the last round today Bikramjit Singh defeated Y. Dhanbir Singh, Trailokya Nanda defeated Projit Phukan, Rajkumar Apollosana defeated Sanjay Singh and Biswajit Nag defeated Monjit Taw.
The next edition i.e. 4th edition of North East Chess Championship will be held in Nagaland at the end of 2010.

Assam Players Dominate
After the seventh round of 3rd North East Championship held at Agartola, Assam players are dominating the tournament.
Rajiv Dhar and Monjit Taw both from Assam are heading the lot with 6 points each. Trailokya Nanda (5 points) is also fighting for 6 points against Sanjay Singh (4.5) of Manipur. They are closely followed by Santanu Borpatra Gohain, Projit Phukan, Cheniram Pegu, Madhab Sarmah (all from Assam), Bikramjit Singh and Y. Dhanbir Singh (both from Manipur) with 5.5 points each. In the 7th round Rajib Dhar defeated L. Thangelung of Mizoram with white pieces in Queen's Gambit declines variation. Manjit Taw drew with Santanu Borpatra Gohain by applying Grunfeld Indian Defense. Madhab Sarmah defeated Subrata Bhattacharjee of Tripura while Cheniram Pegu beat Lalthangan of Mizoram and Projit Phukan defeated Abdus Saddique of Assam.

Assam Players are in lead after round five at NE Chess
Assam players including Rajib Dhar, Santanu Borpatra Gohain, Monjit Taw and Trailokya Nanda are leading with 4.5 points each along with Manipur's Bikramjit Singh and Sanjay Singh after the fifth round of 3rd North-East Chess Championship that is going on at Agartola. They are closely followed by Projit Phukan, Cheniram Pegu (both from Assam) and Rajkumar Apollosana of Manipur with 4 points each.
In an exciting 5th round encounter today (Jan 7), Manjit Taw (former Assam Champion) defeated Mughaho Awami (Nagaland Champion) in just 17 moves applying Queen's Gambit declined variation. Santanu Borpatra Gohain (current Assam Champion) drew with Bikramjit Singh (No 1 seed from Manipur) by applying Slav defense. Rajiv Dhar and Trailokya Nanda also settled in for a draw in a Sicilian Defense system.

3rd North-East Chess Championship gets Started at Agartala
The 3rd edition of North East Chess Championship got started today (Jan 5) at Municipality building, Agartala, Tripura with participation of eight North Eastern states including Sikkim. Altogether 129 players have been fighting for supremacy in the the brain game having 1,00,000/- (One lakh prize money) and a Champion's trophy.
From Assam 16 players including Santanu Borpatra Gohain (current Assam champ, 6th seed in the tournaemnt), Rajiv Dhar (former Assam Champ & 3rd seed in the tournament), Monjit Taw (former Assam Champ), Madhab Sarmah (1st N-E Champ), Projit Phukan, Trailokya Nanda, Durlav Nanda, Smt.Mahasweta Kumar, Abdus Saddique, Cheniram Pegu, Subhendu Guha, Chayan Palit, Rajkumar Nath, Shyam Suddin AhmedRahul Singh and Jugen Kaman.
The second edition of N-E chess championship was held at Guwahati where Rajkumar Appolosana of Manipur won the championship. This time also he is hot favourite to win the crown and he is number one seed. National School champion (held at Guwahati) Sanjay Singh also from Manipur is seeded second. Santanu Borpatra Gohain though seeded at 6th is also in good form and a good contender for the title whereas Assam's Rajiv Dhar is seeded as 3rd. All these seeding was decided on the basis of International rating (Elo rating).
At the time of the writing this report, some results of the first round have already come out. As expected seeded players including Santanu Borpatra Gohain, Rajiv Dhar, Monjit Taw, Trailokya Nanda, Mahasweta Kumar and Durlov Nanda defeated that rivals. However Madhav Sarma was held to a draw unexpectedly by Jogen Kaman.
International arbiter K. R. Seshadri from Chennai is the chief arbiter of the tournament.
